Door Naseef House

Door Naseef House

The old center of Jeddah known as Balad is an area of Turkish-style houses of typical Red Sea construction material of stone and coral blocks. This door of Naseef House, one of the oldest houses, is painted an unusual green color - almost certainly an aniline dye. Steps have been taken to protect the heritage of old Jeddah but much was destroyed before preservations began. Today the area houses the poorest people who have neither the resources nor the understanding of what is required to keep the houses from falling apart. It is unlikely they will crumble however as the country is wealthy and like many countries after the first frenzy of 'development' now understands the importance of its architectural heritage.
