Turkmenistan flag

Turkmenistan flag

Hippodrome, Ashgabad

The Turkmenistan flag is a green background with the white crescent moon and 5 stars of Islam with five red patterned ‘guls’ down the side. Each gul represents one of the five provinces that make up the country - a gul literally means flower but in this case refers to the motifs in the famous Turkmen carpets. Each area and tribe has its own motifs which in years gone by made the wearer or bearer of such patterns instantly identifiable.
