After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Turkmenistan became independent in October 1991. In 1995, the United Nations approved Turkmenistan’s desired policy of ‘permanent neutrality’. This three-legged monument which symbolizes the traditional trivet on which a Turkmen cooking pot sits, commemorates this event. Atop the monument is a 12 foot gold statue of President Niyazov with outstretched arms which revolves throughout the day so that it always faces the sun.
