Arch of Neutrality

Arch of Neutrality

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Turkmenistan became independent in October 1991. In 1995, the United Nations approved Turkmenistan’s desired policy of ‘permanent neutrality’. This three-legged monument which symbolizes the traditional trivet on which a Turkmen cooking pot sits, commemorates this event. Atop the monument is a 12 foot gold statue of former President Niyazov (Turkmenbashy) with outstretched arms which revolves throughout the day so that it always faces the sun.
