An alley off Spanish Street

An alley off Spanish Street

Tripoli Medina

Traditionally in medina life, men left their homes in the morning to go to work, returning early afternoon for lunch and a siesta. Later they would go back to work and then would meet their friends in a cafe to while away the hours. The house was for the women and men were not an integral part of the day to day running of it. Nowadays the habit continues - more mundanely probably because the houses are not air-conditioned and men and children use the streets to congregate and play. This wide buttressed alley lying of Spanish Street gives plenty of shade for gossip or play.
