Date palm Groves

Date palm Groves

Nile delta

There are 8 million date palm trees in Egypt according to my guide and most of the production is consumed locally. During Ramadan, the fast is broken by eating a handful of dates, and special cakes are baked using crushed dates and nuts. Ibn Battuta speaks of the date palm groves and they are still here although the method of cultivation has changed. A special kind of oasis cultivation was practiced with pomegranates or orange trees planted in the shade of the date palms, then onions, beans and potatoes for example growing in the shade of the fruit trees. Nowadays separate orchards and groves are planted which increase the yield of the principal crop.
