Boat building, Rashid

Boat building, Rashid

The Nile empties out into the Mediterranean at Rashid or Rosetta. Fishing boats like this ply the coast and there is a considerable boat-building industry here in this town which historically was important, but is now a sleepy town. (The famous Rosetta stone in the British Museum was found here in the Qait Bey fort by the French who were re-building the fort. Everyone knows that the stone written in hieroglyphics, demotic and Greek, enabled French scholar Champollion to decipher hieroglyphics. What most people do not know is that it was written in the time of Ptolemy V (205-181BC) and was a letter of thanks to him from a priest for not taxing his temple!
