Al Aqmar Mosque

Al Aqmar Mosque

Al Aqmar mosque

The al-Aqmar Mosque built by the Fatimids in 1125 was the first in the city to be built of stone. The distinctive ribbing in the arch portal and the inset medallion as well as the muqarnas (not shown) were all used here for the first time. Al Aqmar means 'moonlit' perhaps a reference to its pale creamy color.
