Annother typical street - part of the Rue Tourbet al-Bey. The medina was a self-sufficient community enclosed by defensive walls with housing, mosques, cemeteries, shops, artisans, schools, (madrasas) and baths (hammams). The medieval system meant that space was artfully used; densely-linked streets were narrow as donkeys carried everything, dead-end streets ended in communal courtyards for the residents' privacy, and arched and covered areas protected from the sun and rain. Note the 'borrowed' Roman column on the left side.
