Perhaps the heart of historic Jordan, it is almost entirely populated by Bedouin, the original settlers of these lands who now form only about 20% of the population. The government regards Ma'an as a potentiallly ‘troublesome’ area not without good reason. Fiercely independent, they resist measures they don’t like. They are also however hospitable to a fault and you will not be there long before you are offered tea or Arabic coffee. This is all that remains of old Ma'an dating back to approximately the 16th century (I am told), although it looks much older.
