Byblos port

Byblos port

This charming, sleepy little Mediterranean port belies a great history - it was one of the greatest Phoenician trading cities. It gave its name to the Bible, as Byblos was the Greek word for papyrus which was traded here. It is ironic that its history comes down to us in Greek names; the Phoenicians (the name the Greeks called the Canaanites) as well as the city's name, since the Phonecians themselves called it Gebal - its Arabic name today is Jubeil.
