Iron Bridge Replacement

Iron Bridge Replacement

South from Beirut

I was told these ancient iron bridges came from France as a stopgap measure. There is a great deal of resentment in the south as the bridges are not being repaired, or not fast enough. I did see some repair work being done but I was told (not verified) that most of this was being done with private money and not government funds - in which case where is the money going that was given by Saudi Arabia and other wealthy Arab states? Perhaps they are not so interested in re-building the Shi'ite south..... another element in the never-ending vicious circle of Lebanese politics.
