Temple of Bacchus lintel

Temple of Bacchus lintel

Unlike the Temple of Jupiter which was freely accessed by the public, the Temple of Bacchus admitted only initiates for whom opium and alcohol were used to reach ecstasy during their rituals. Bacchus represented fertility and life over death and the monumental entrance is carved with vines, wheat stalks, and mythological figures.
