Grand Courtyard

Grand Courtyard

The dimensions of the Grand Courtyard speak to its importance at 134 X 112 meters. The altars and ritual pools can be seen and in the center was a tower flanked by two granite columns. After Christianity was adopted as the offical religion of the Roman Empire, all was destroyed to make way for a basilica. The portico around the courtyard held 8 rectangular exedras and 4 semi-circular exedras - wall niches held statues, all of which have disappeared.
