Baka-shugur castle

Baka-shugur castle

Ross Burns calls this “the most breathtaking castle site in Syria”. Despite no mention in Crusader records, written Arab records state that Saladin took the southern part of the fortress on August 5, 1188 - the Crusaders took refuge in the northern part but were forced to surrender when the Prince of the Realm did not respond to pleas for help. It passed to the Mongols but Baibars re-took control by 1270. An earthquake in 1404 destroyed much of the castle which now lies in ruins.
