The city’s cardo-maximus - a dead straight two kilometers long - had 1200 columns of which 400 have been restored. There are three styles; plain, fluted, and spiral fluting which is unique in Syria. From one column to another, the spiral rotates from right to left - a device for which scholars have as yet no consensual explanation. Many of the columns, like Palmyra, have brackets atop which statues would have been placed.
