Tok-i-sarrafon

Bukhara

Suzannes in one of Bukhara's many bazaars. These beautifully embroidered pieces were used as wall hangings and nowadays as tablecloths, bedspreads or other decorative items. The word comes from the Persian/Tajik word for embroidery, and young girls started embroidering the suzannes they would take to their homes on their wedding day from a young age. The tradition was almost lost but is now making something of a comeback, even if the stitching on the modern ones is not quite as delicate as that of the antiques.
