Ismail Samani mausoleum

Ismail Samani mausoleum

A gem of 9th/10th century architecture. The mausoleum houses the founder of the Samanid dynasty, as well as his father and nephew. The domed cube fused old elements from the Persians with new advances in mathematics, to produce squinches, a revolutionary technique for the time. Its basket-weave brickwork in a series of random patterns gives a lightness to the solidity of the cube's corner buttresses.
