Dome, Tillya Kari madrasa

Dome, Tillya Kari madrasa

This 17th century addition to the Registan was built as the city's Friday or Cathedral Mosque because by then the Bibi Khanum Mosque, which had been built for that purpose, was in ruins. The interior is gold leaf, Tillya Kari means 'gilded'. The technique of gilding now is, like the ceramics process, not as durable. Formerly gold leaf was attached to animal skins and beaten with a mallet, now it is done by chemicals and electrolysis.
