Cotton stamping

Cotton stamping

Marghilan, Ferghana Province

A time-honored craft throughout Central Asia. Walnut is used to make the wooden 'stamping' blocks while rusty nails, bone, wheat flour, mung beans, cottonseed oil and walnut husks were boiled up in a cauldron to produce the staying power of the black ink. Apricot sap, chamomile and madder were used for colorings.
