Great mosque, Kilwa

Great mosque, Kilwa

Kilwa Kisiwani

This part of the Great Mosque was built in the 15th century after Ibn Battuta's visit. At its peak in the 14th century Kilwa was one of the most important ports on the Indian Ocean - today it is just a collection of ruins mainly dating from the 18th and 19th century when it was controlled by the Omanis after they suceeded in pushing the Portuguese out. Kilwa was destroyed by the Portuguese in the 15th century before regaining some standing under the Omanis.
