Women of Hasik

Women of Hasik

Ibn B mentioned that the people of Hasik were ‘Arabs’. This part of the world has changed hands several times - the people of Dhofar province in Oman and the people of Mahra province in eastern Yemen are linked by history, culture and language. In Ibn Battuta’s time the people of Hasik would have been Bedouin Arabs but now most of the people are ‘African’ Omanis and not ‘Arab’. (Zanzibar in East Africa used to be part of Oman hence the population is very mixed.) The women like many coastal women in these parts dress in much brighter colors than their inland sisters and do not cover their faces, although in common with most women here they do not like to be photographed.
