Under the Arches, Khaju bridge

Under the Arches, Khaju bridge

This is perhaps Isfahan's best-known and most beautiful bridge. The existing structure built in 1650 also acted as a dam. Sluice gates closed the canals under the arches raising the water level upstream, which was used to irrigate the surrounding orchards. This process is stlll done to fill the irrigation canals on neither side of the river. On Friday’s Isfahanis come and sing under the arches - the echo it produces is marvellous.
