The Immortals

The Immortals

The inner staircase of the Apadana is carved with lance carrying guards called “The Immortals” because there were ten thousand of them and when one died he was immediately replaced, so that there were always ten thousand. Like the royal guards, the pommels of their lances rested on the forward foot, they wore typical flowing Persian robes but on their hards had a mitra or a cable-edged cap on the head.
