Interior dome of Sheikh Lotfullah Mosque

Interior dome of Sheikh Lotfullah Mosque

The interior single-shell dome of Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque is the apotheosis of the combination of science and art; a gold medallion at the center gives way to a pattern of stylized cypresses that increase in size the closer they approach the drum. Inside each cypress different artistic and geometric patterns are picked out in blue, white turquoise and yellow tile. The mathematical and geometrical genius required to make the design fit perfectly into a dome shape, is truly staggering. From the entrance to the hall as you look up, light from the apex of the dome spills down the side creating the effect of a peacock’s tailfeathers. The sixteen pattern-screened windows which pierce the drum fill the hall with filtered light giving it an ethereal quality entirely fitting for a religious building.
