The Iranian flag is composed of three horizontal bands of green, white and red; the green is the color of Islam, white for peace and red for defence of the country. In the middle of the white band is a red stylized tulip- the Iranian symbol of martyrdom designed in calligraphy of the word 'Allah'. Separating the colors is a small white calligraphic band with the phrase "AllahuAkhbar". Schoolchildren remember their flag as green for the mountains in the north, and red for the deserts of the south. (These flags have been hung with the bands vertical.)
