Ferdawsi's tomb

Ferdawsi's tomb

Tus, Iran

Ferdawsi is a towering figure in Iranian culture. He wrote the Shahnameh or 'Book of Kings' in 'modern' Persian at a time when in Persia everyone spoke Arabic. He translated a book written in Old Persian that dated back to Sassanian times in order to create the Shahnameh, a massive tome of Iran's legendary and factual history. He is credited with having 'saved' the Persian language and the Shahnameh is found in every Iranian home to this day.
