Blue Mosque facade

Blue Mosque facade

The Blue Mosque was begun in 1611 and took 18 years to complete. The embellishment and love of decoration is seen in the lavish use of polychrome tiling in cobalt, blue and yellow and in the mosaic work on the portals. The arch of the main portal which is 27 meters (90ft) high, is edged with a ‘cable’ ornamentation in turquoise tile which fronts a series of elaborate muqarnas vaulting, while the white ‘Thulth’ calligraphy surrounds three sides of the iwan facade - the whole is flanked by two 42 meter (110ft) minarets.
