Restored coffered ceiling

Restored coffered ceiling

masjid al-Abbas

The exquisitely restored ceiling of al-Abbas Mosque in Asnaf built in 1126 under the Fatimid Sulayid dynasty. Its tiny cube shape holds 6 columns of which 4 are pre-Islamic with capitals reminiscent of those of Marib. The coffered ceiling has 22 carved and gilded caissons. Restoration was completed in 1996 under the auspices of the French Center for Yemeni Studies using French and Yemeni craftsmen.
