Ajmanni village woman

al-Mahwit

Women in the north of Yemen wear distinctive colored robes worn like chadors, called sitarah. In Sana’a you often see country women wearing a blue and red robe in a pattern similar to that found in Provence in France, in addition to a black veil with a distinctive tie-dyed red and white pattern like an eye, called lithma. Unique to the women of al-Mahwit is this indigo dyed garment covered with a red teardrop pattern.
