Mosaic peacock

Mosaic peacock

Greek Orthodox Monastery, Nablus

Many early Christian paintings and mosaics had a peacock which became a symbol of eternity and immortality because it was believed its flesh did not decay after death. Paradoxically perhaps it was also a symbol of earthly vanity. The peacock is especially prevalent in the art of the Eastern churches.
